Rhine Falls

The Rhine Falls are also called Schaffausen waterfalls and are the largest waterfalls in Europe.

They are situated in the high part of the river Rhine, not far from the city of Schaffausen in northern Switzerland, near the border with Germany. The waterfalls were formed about 120,000 years ago when the Rhine flowed south of Schaffausen and began to create small rivers. After the last glaciation the Rhine began to dig its bed in the limestone and now, where the river makes a bend, they create waterfalls.

Today they are 23m high and have a width of 150m. On the bank of the Rhine there is the castle of Wörth, from which people can reach the mouth of the waterfalls by boat and see a fantastic show.

Here, actually, water is really powerful and people are often overwhelmed by splashes and water vapor which is formed by thousands of small drops, which on sunny days produce beautiful rainbows.
