BERNINA

StartFragment

During the Easter holidays I went with my family to Tirano, about 30 kilometers far from Sondrio. I visited the medieval town on the first day and on the second day we took a red train called "Bernina". Departing from the station near Tirano, this train begins to rise up slightly crossing a square and after 2km it passes the Italian-Swiss border arriving then to the station of Campocologno (located in the Canton Grisons: it is an Italian speaking canton, although German is the predominant language). After 15 minutes there is a spiral viaduct called "Buzz" that is unique in the world for it is entirely outdoor. Here the train makes a circle of more than 360° to gain altitude. The climb continues gradually from Brusio to Poschiavo, that is 1000m high. Then the train makes the Bernina, crossing spectacular scenery. After one hour we arrived at Alp Grunn, that is 2091 meters high in a remarkable viewpoint over the Swiss mountains. From here you can see the glacier Palau and a small lake; there is also a place where you can sleep. Proceeding downwards with the train there are many ski resorts near Lagalb and Diavolezza. After 10 km there is a glacier amphiteatre in Mortertasch that is very suggestive. The train continues through the Engadine mountains, then it reaches St. Moritz, one of the most famous and exclusive cities of the Alps, known as the "Montecarlo of the Alps". It was a great week end and I saw a lot of beautiful landscapes.
