SIRMIONE CASTLE

StartFragment

I was in Sirmione, near the Garda lake, last summer and no doubt its castle was very impressive. This castle was built for the Scala family and is also the gateway to the old town. It is one of the best preserved castles in Italy as well as an excellent example of lake fortification. It is bathed by the Garda lake in all its four sides. On the right side a dock was also built to offer shelter to the fleet. The towers have dovetail battlements and after 146 steps it is possible to arrive to the highest tower (47m high) and you can walk in the walkways up to the castle where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the lake. There are also two drawbridges. Inside there is a Roman lapidary and a museum on the history of the castle. There is also a legend about the castle that says that on stormy nights the souls of sailors who sank near here haunt the castle.
